Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for curing of gout. It is used to cure high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to treat certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It can also used in other situations as suggested by your doctor.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken by mouth. Visit your doctor regarding the dosage suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing curing with Allopurinol. It can take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking Allopurinol even if you feel well.
Additional Information
Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly negative tasks until you know how you react to this pill. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, consult your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your physician.
