Step up your puppetry and performance skills in a new and exciting way by improvising with puppets! In this workshop participants will learn how to perform improv with puppets for the stage in a fun and supportive environment. Improvisation teaches us how to think fast, communicate clearly, move a scene forward, and to listen attentively to everything our scene partners are sharing. Most importantly, it teaches us how to relax and have fun in the moment! By the end of class you will have the skills of basic improvisation and the knowledge of how to use it in your performance and everyday life. Open to all levels! This workshop is a wonderful introduction to improvising with puppets, but also a great refresher for those with improv experience. Participants are asked to bring their own puppet.
John Jennings fell in love with improv during college back in 2005, and has since studied at SAK Comedy Lab (Orlando), iO (Chicago), and Upright Citizen Brigade (LA). He got his start in puppetry in 2006, being hired as a full-time puppeteer for Disney, where he worked on various shows and parades in their parks (both FL & CA), and in their studios. The first puppet he ever performed, in front of a live audience, was Bear from Bear in the Big Blue House, and he has also worked on a few projects (live shows/parades) performing Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, for The Walt Disney Company. Over the years he has worked on TV shows, movies, commercials, web series, animation series, ebooks and more. John has been producing his own sketch comedy and improv show called ‘Tipsy Kangaroo’s Naughty Puppet Revue!’ in the Twin Cities since 2016, and he produces his own improvised, puppet hosted, morning talk show segment called ‘HELL-O! & Good Morning’ on Microsoft’s live streaming platform Mixer. You can currently find his show being performed live M-F mornings at mixer.com/TipsyRoo.
