Pop-up books can make wonderful stages for tiny marionettes, be they simple paper marionettes or more complex three dimensional ones. In this workshop you will learn the process of designing a pop-up book to be used as a stage. You will make a mock-up and work towards the goal of a finished stage. You will be able to examine some of Monica’s pop-up stages and look at her collection of pop-up books and instruction books. You will also have the opportunity to make charming two-dimensional characters for your story. Bring any paper tools you like working with (small scissors, exacto knives, etc; tools will be available if you don’t have any you prefer) and a general idea you’d like to work on.
Monica Leo is a first generation American, born to German refugees in the waning days of World War Two. After the war, her parents ordered a set of Kasperle hand puppets from a German craftswoman, and Monica was hooked. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Monica studied for two years at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf, Germany with Josef Beuys. Since 1975, she has been creating and performing as founder and principal puppeteer of Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre, based at Owl Glass Puppetry Center in West Liberty, Iowa. Since 1998, she has created five different shows using pop-up book stages, many of which have been featured at festivals in the US and Germany. Eulenspiegel, the recipient of the Iowa Arts Award, has toured in 31 states and four other countries.
