This workshop will teach the construction of stage-effective masks for Scarf Marionette and small-scale puppets in the style of Roser’s Paper-Sculpture Technique. Night Shade artists Sarah Frechette and Jason Thibodeaux will demonstrate paper-sculpture methods developed by German Master Puppeteer Albrecht Roser. He created this method as a way to unify construction and performance because one of Roser’s theories was that technique and art must serve expression. Participants will then design their own MINI MASK by following a series of paper-folding steps. Paper-Sculpture is a technique that allows the artist to discover an expressive sculptural face from an otherwise flat piece of paper. For this workshop participants must be skilled at using x-acto knives and small sharp scissors.
Sarah Frechette is a touring puppeteer and arts educator. She mentored with Master Puppeteer Albrecht Roser absorbing his theories on zen and the art of puppetry from 2002-2009. Sarah has performed with her roser-style marionettes as part of Meisterklasse; at the 2018 Mariottissimo Festival at the PUK Museum in Bad Kreuznach, Germany; and in 2017 at the final celebration in Roser’s Buoch Studio.
Jason Thibodeaux is a fine artist and director. He painted puppets for the stop-mo television show “The Shivering Truth” on Adult Swim; and on LAIKA’s stop-motion feature films Coraline, ParaNorman, The BoxTrolls and Kubo.
As founders of the artist collective Night Shade, Sarah and Jason performed at the 2018 Internationales Shattentheater Festival in Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany.
