Becoming a member of Puppeteers of America puts you in touch with other puppeteers across the nation!

Puppeteers of America is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1937 which provides information, encourages performances, and builds a community of people who love puppet theatre. Anyone can be a member of Puppeteers of America. Share the enchantment of puppetry with professional puppeteers, puppet builders, teachers, librarians, therapists, youth leaders, hobbyists and audience members who are enthusiastic about puppetry

PUBLICATIONS

  • The Puppetry Journal
    • The magazine of Puppeteers of America apears four times a year. Each issue is filled with articles and photographs featuring puppeteers, puppet theatres, exhibitions, touring companies, guilds, technical tips, new books, films, television, and puppet fesitvals.

  • Playboard
    • A newsletter published six times a year containing current information on puppet festivals, organizational news, reviews, and technical advice.

RESOURCES

  • Audiovisual Library
    • Established in 1979, the library is a resource center and archives for the recorded history of puppets. All materials in this catalog are on VHS tape.

  • Membership Directory
    • Helps you contact local guilds, puppetry centers, and over 2,000 puppetry enthusiasts.

  • Puppetry Consultants
    • Get tips on puppetry from the professionals! Over 20 working puppeteers give you feedback on different aspects of the art.

PUPPETRY FESTIVALS

  • National Puppetry Festivals
    • Intensive one week conferences are held every other year in different regions of the country. You can see puppet theatre in many styles performed by award winning artist and newly discovered talent. There are workshops on all aspects of puppetry, exhibits of contempory and historic puppets and opertunities to make friends and contacts with puppeteers from many states and countries. Members of the Puppeteers of America receive discounted admission prices to all National Puppetry Festivals.

  • Regional Puppetry Festivals
    • These festivals are shorter versions of the national festivals, and are held in even numbered years in most of the eight regions of the country. Members of the Puppeteers of America receive discounted admission prices to all Regional Puppetry Festivals.

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, & ENDOWMENT FUNDS

  • Grants Awarded
    • Members are eligible to apply for small projects grants. Awards range from $100-$1,000 and are made every two years.

  • Scholarships
  • Endowment Fund
    • The fund was established in 1975 to honor Rufus Rose and is available to members. Contributions to the fund are invested and every two years awards are made from the interest that has accumulated.

INSURANCE

  • Liability Insurance
    • Very often performers are required, by the people who hire them, to carry liability insurance. As a member you can purchase a million dollars of liability coverage at a very nominal annual cost. Members may purchase liability insurance through the Puppeteers of America. This insurance is a million dollar policy at a nominal cost. This service is only for members of Puppeteers of America.
