In 1930 Paul McPharlin published the first Puppetry Yearbook. After1937 the Yearbooks became the official publication of Puppeteers of America . These elegant 16 volumes chronicle puppetry from 1930-1948 and are highly prized by collectors.

For additional information a newsletter was created called the Grapevine Telegraph.

George Latshaw transformed the newsletter into the Puppetry Journal. Volume One appeared in July of 1949.

The Journal was published six times a year.

Vivian Michael was editor from 1950 to 1969.
Don Avery was editor from 1969 to 1982,
Maureen Casey was editor in 1982, the Journal changed to a larger size and was published 4 times a year.
George and Pat Latshaw edited the Journal from 1983-1999.
Paul Eide is the current editor

In 1990 a newsletter called Playboard was established, with Paul Eide as editor. Fred Thompson is the current editor of Playboard.

Charlemagne Press publishes Index to Puppetry Journal in 3 volumes.
Vol 1 begins with the first Journal in July 1949 until Summer 1982 (Vol I-XXXIII)
Vol 2 continues Fall 1982-Summer 1987 (Vol XXXIV-XXXVIII)
Vol 3 continues Fall 1987-Summer 1994 ( Vol 39-45)
